Our valued clients @ Empress Court
Going classy with less

The Kumars have fine tuned their three-bedroom apartment in Empress County, Camp Area, to give a fine balance of aesthetic and utility, finds Zoha tapia

A quiet road lined with trees on both sides leads to Empress County in Camp Area. Here at A - 406. Empress Court, which is behind Empress Garden. Jaya and Devashish Kumar have set up their home. Overlooking lush greenery this three-bedroom plush apartment on the fourth poor is a dream house for them. Located within the city and yet away from the din and pollution of the more commercialized areas, the Kumar's have found their perfect home.

House hunting

After Devashish Kumar's transfer from Chennai to Pune. the couple had a tough time looking out for a house in Pune. "Unlike Chennai and Bangalore, where we have lived before, the quality of construction isn't that great here. This was the first house we saw but since Devashish works in Kalyani Nagar we thought of looking around there. However, we were really disappointed with the kind of houses we saw there. as they were so small and tiny. Hence we stuck by our first choice. It is in the midst of the city and quite close to MG Road," says Jaya.

The main reason for them to opt for this place was the access to ample of natural light and also the space.

Making a home

Since they were shifting base from Chennai to Pune. Majority of the furniture was from their earlier house. Also, with a toddler to take care of the house has been made very child friendly and there Isn't much breakable items around. "When we shifted, we did club our old furniture with a bit of some new finds from Pune. We did not want the conventional sofas or anything overly fancy or over the top. Less but classy. good looking and sturdy that the way we wanted the house to be." says Jaya.

The plain white walls adorned with frames give the house a very earthy appeal. As sunlight streams Into the well lit hall the clear marble floors shine.

The rooms, with attached bathrooms have inbuilt cup-boards that give the wall a smooth leveled look. The house has a lot of windows and luckily don't overlook someone else's house. Also the bathrooms are well tiled and came with proper fittings including lights and exhaust fans, thus reducing a lot of work and expenses for them.

They clubbed together their old furniture from Chennai with new ones from Pune.

As it overlooks the cantonment area the view from each room is scenic and gives one a pleasant view of greenery. Also due to the large number of trees growing in the area, the temperature is quite cool. With generous space within and outside, the Kumars' new house is ideal for their child.

Money Matter

Money was not an issue with the Kumar's. They just needed the perfect place, which suited their tastes and preferences. The 1.850 sq ft house, which they bought for around Rs 30 lakh, is now worth around Rs 40 lakh.

Comfort zone

For Devashish, his comfort zone remains the bedroom. Due to his hectic work hours tills is one place he gets to rest peacefully, whereas Jaya is still in a mixed frame of mind. At times the sofa in her living room teamed up with the morning newspaper really excites her but otherwise the terrace really appeals to her.

Experience

With a clear mind as to how they wanted their house to be Jaya really didn't have a tough time setting up her home. "We took possession of the house immediately and from there it took us around three weeks to do up the entire house. Of course we are still in the process of fine tuning it up," Jaya says. "We were very clear that we didn't want to live in a big society and 1 felt that the security here is much more efficient and better. Regarding the furniture I wanted things to be geometrically straight. I didn't want curvy sofa legs and fancy things. If I ever think of another house I will surely go in for the same builder as the layout is SO good and the scenery and openness is so pleasing that furniture isn't really needed." she adds. All in all it was a beautiful experience setting up the house for the Kumar's. From Chennai to a guest house in Baner Road to Empress County the journey has been hectic but worthwhile. Close to school, workplace and centrally located, settling down here has reduced commuting time. However, as the area is still under development, getting public transport is still a problem.
